What is Engraving?

At Wolverhampton Trophy Centre, we offer a wide range of engraving services and have done since our business was first established in 1980. Engraving is described as the practice of incising a design onto a hard surface by cutting grooves into it with a tool that’s known as a burin.

Engraving is thought to have originated in both the Rhine valley in Germany and in the north of Italy in around the middle of the 15th century. It is believed that it was a technique first used by goldsmiths who wanted to create designs on gold jewellery and plates.

Engraving was an incredibly important historical technique used to produce images on metal, wood and paper in artistic printmaking and mapmaking. At Wolverhampton Trophy Centre, we are proud to continue the tradition of engraving on and are delighted to have dedicated and talented engravers who carry out their work to the highest possible levels to create the best finish for all of our customers.

What is Engraving

Engraving Burins

A burin is a steel cutting tool that consists of a round handle and a steel shaft that has a very sharp cutting face. This sharp cutting face allows for extreme precision when used by expert engravers meaning they are able to create excellent bespoke designs for clients. Engravers typically have several different burins of different sizes and shapes of cutting face to allow for different designs and patterns to be created. Burins are usually held at approximately 30 degrees from the surface and the index and middle finger guides the shaft while the handle is cradled in the palm.

How Engraving is Carried Out

Engraving involves making grooves in metal and various different types of metals are suitable for this process. This involves aluminium, brass, copper, steel, stainless steel, gold, silver, Corten and galvanised steel. Grooves are made into specific patterns by engravers who know exactly how to create these onto the metal surface they’re working with. This is incredibly detailed and skilled work and is something that takes years of practice to perfect.
